“In five years’ time all ocean-going racers will be like this one”, said Bubi Sansó.

The ACCIONA 100% EcoPowered reached Cascais, the final port-of-call in the first leg of the Europa Warm Up, in the early hours of 25 May, making it quite clear that the eco-efficiency of the vessel itself and its green-energy based systems are no idle claim.

“The energy systems have run smoothly and we haven’t had to worry about the slightest thing. In actual fact, our batteries are more charged now than they were when we set sail from Barcelona. It all worked to a ‘T’. This is an historical moment: this is the first 100% green vessel to complete an ocean-going race. It’s a real trailblazer, but I reckon that in five years’ time all ocean-going racers will be like this one”, said Bubi Sansó.

It was just after 3.30 in the morning (03:36:10 am, to be precise) on Friday when Bubi and his crew pulled into the port of Cascais, in Portugal, followed up by a tough race between Barcelona and Cascais.

With the first leg of the Europa Warm Up behind them, Bubi is ready to go solo on his 60-foot sail-boat and take on a new challenge: the Cascais-La Rochelle leg, leaving Azores starboard side and veering past Ireland’s legendary Fastnet Rock.

It’s just one more test before the project faces its ultimate goal: the Vendée Globe.
